Fall in Aspen

While summer is still in full swing right now, pretty soon fall will be upon us! Before you know it, the leaves will be turning colors, and the air will be crisp and cool.

Have you ever considered visiting Aspen in the fall? Fall is a wonderful time to experience Aspen. The fall foliage is breathtakingly beautiful, temperatures are mild, and there are less crowds than you'll find during peak ski season.

One of our favorite ways to experience fall in Aspen is on a scenic drive! Take in the best views Aspen has to offer on these roads:

Maroon Bells

Maroon Bells is one of the most stunning natural wonders in the entire United States. It may just be the most photographed mountain range in North America—all this is to say, it’s definitely worth the trip! The peaks of Maroon Bells are the perfect place to see Aspen in all its fall glory. Take along your camera to savor the moment forever!

Maroon Bells is stunning year-round, but seeing the peaks with the golden colors of leaves is an unforgettable experience. Take the kids along to experience fall in Aspen from a really incredible vantage point. We reccommend making reservations to visit the Maroon Bells Scenic Area after your drive, too. If you make it all this way, why not stay awhile and enjoy some beautiful nature?

Grand Junction to Grand Mesa

Travel this road for more stunning sights of aspen trees turning golden colors this fall! Starting in Grand Junction, travel east on I-70 through Palisade, following the scenic Colorado River where riverside cottonwoods gradually turn yellow.

At Colorado 65, head east and then south through canyon landscapes, ascending to the summit of Grand Mesa. Here, you'll be greeted by stretches of aspens that extend as far as the eye can see. It’s really quite the remarkable experience!

Independence Pass

Independence Pass, part of Colorado State Highway 82, offers one of the most dramatic and scenic drives in the state. This 32-mile route from Aspen to Twin Lakes climbs to an elevation of 12,095 feet, providing incredible views of the Rocky Mountains. In the fall, the route is lined with golden aspens, creating a dazzling display of color.

The pass includes several pull-off points where you can stop to see these magnificent sights, including the ghost town of Independence. The combination of historical intrigue and natural beauty makes Independence Pass a must-visit during the fall season. Learn more about ghost towns past and get a look through a modern lens of Colorado’s nature at its finest when you drive through Independence Pass!

Glenwood Canyon

Glenwood Canyon offers a unique and spectacular driving experience along Interstate 70. This scenic canyon drive, just an hour from Aspen, winds alongside the Colorado River and is framed by towering cliffs that rise up to 1,300 feet. In the fall, the canyon's foliage turns vibrant hues of yellow and orange, contrasting strikingly with the rugged rock formations.

There are several rest areas and trails on the way. Take a break and stretch your legs at Hanging Lake Trail to really take in the natural beauty of the canyon. The combination of striking geology and brilliant fall colors makes Glenwood Canyon a perfect fall drive in Aspen.

Trail Ridge Road

Trail Ridge Road is one of the highest continuous paved roads in the United States, crossing the Rocky Mountain National Park. Starting in Estes Park and reaching Grand Lake, this road climbs to over 12,000 feet, offering unparalleled views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. In the fall it’s more impressive than ever with the gorgeous leaves lining the roads!

The road provides numerous overlooks and pullouts where you can stop to enjoy the sweeping vistas and fresh mountain air. Trail Ridge Road is a bit of a drive from Aspen, but its stunning scenery and the chance to experience the diverse ecosystems of the Rockies make it well worth the trip.
