Today, we're going to talk about a truly can't miss activity: visiting Maroon Bells!

Part of the Elk Mountains, Maroon Bells is a top tourist destination for a reason. You can get in some awesome hikes here, and it’s a great spot for photos. The mountains glow a purplish color around dusk and dawn, a must-see photo op while you’re here in Aspen!

Want to see it for yourself? You’re in the right place! We’ve put together a comprehensive guide to Maroon Bells to help answer the important questions like how to get there, the best time to visit, and the top activities. Let’s dive into it!

How to Get to Maroon Bells

By Car

You can definitely drive to Maroon Bells! However, take note that there are seasonal restrictions. Personal vehicles are only allowed before 8:00 AM or after 5:00 PM from mid-May to late October. Between those hours, you’ll have to take a shuttle. Outside of peak season, you can drive directly to the parking area. Taking a shuttle may be the easiest option!

By Shuttle

If you’re visitng during peak season, we would recommend taking the Maroon Bells Scenic Shuttle. It departs conveniently from Aspen Highlands, and starts running in June of every year. The shuttle runs all day and helps reduce traffic congestion in the mountains. Book your tickets in advance online and you’re all set to go!

By Bike or Hike

Though it’s a challenge, you can bike the scenic 10-mile route from Aspen to Maroon Bells. You can also hike to Maroon Bells from West Maroon Pass or other backcountry trails. Getting in a workout before you even arrive at your destination is one way to start off your day!

Best Time to Visit Maroon Bells

Maroon Bells is gorgeous any time of year, but every season has pros and cons. Let’s explore them now:

Summer (June to August)

The weather is mild in summertime, and the mountains are alive with plants, animals, and wildflowers. It’s a beautiful time to visit, but it is peak season, so it’ll be very crowded.

Fall (September to Early October)

Autumn is (arguably) our favorite time to visit Maroon Bells. You won’t be able to get over the fall foliage—it’s indescribably beautiful. Fall is a great time for cooler hikes, but keep in mind that snow can start falling as early as October. It gets chilly at these high altitudes!

Winter (November to April)

In winter, the road to Maroon Bells is closed to vehicles, but you can still access it via snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, or guided snowmobile tours. It’s so quiet up here in the wintertime that it’s almost eerie, but if you like your solitude, you’ll love it!

Spring (Late April to May)

Spring is the least predictable season in Aspen. Anything can happen! There’s often still snow lingering on trails and roads, but you also might catch some pleasant warm weather. The waterfalls start flowing again in spring, too!
